In 1910 a group of local enthusiasts founded and
financed a 9-hole golf course on the Wetherby Ings where, previously,
steeplechase racing was the major sporting activity.
Most
of the land was leased from the Leconfield Estate until the early 1920's
when the course was extended to a full 18-holes to a design by the
famous architect Dr. Alistair Mackenzie and the club commenced to lease
and purchase the 90 acres piece by piece.
Within the last thirty years two extra parcels of
redundant farmland have been acquired to the south of the club house to
build six completely new holes to replace those crammed into the narrow
neck of land alongside the increasingly busy road through the village
of Linton.
Wetherby can now proudly present an 18-hole golf course that has been constructed to meet the requirements of the modern game.
From the tiger tees, the new course has been extended to
almost 6,700 yards, though, because of the generous space available in
the construction of tees, there are now five variable tee positions
providing a course to suit all ages and golfing abilities. This
includes the junior golfers who have graduated from our active and
successful Academy.
Six holes now have stunning views of the River Wharfe as
it winds its way from Collingham to Wetherby. The hill climbing
over the closing holes has been eliminated and, although the course is
best described as undulating, the walking is comfortable and pleasant.
Added to that, the course, with its new design, has
achieved its major goal of providing two loops of 9-holes, one of Dr.
Mackenzie's priority aims for the perfect layout, though he never
managed to achieve it himself over 80 years ago.
A
warm welcome awaits members and visitors alike.
