CLASSIC WIN PUTS WETHERBY THROUGH TO FIFTH ROUND OF MAIL ON SUNDAY

The qualifying event for the Country Members Cup produced a huge entry despite the handicap limit of 18 and only eight places available for the knock-out.

The successful score was 71, two lower than standard scratch with three players coming from Division 1, four from Division 2.  Plus Euan O'Hara, a
22 handicapper from the third division who carded a net 66, which off an 18 limit qualifies as a 70.

Leader from the premier division was Ben Ragg with a net 67. Playing off eight he is hoping for a professional career so his handicap reduction to six has come at an opportune moment.

Sunday's performance by the Men's team in the fourth round of the Mail on Sunday Classic was almost as hot as the weather. New players to the squad Ian McIlroy, Andy Jones and Benn Ragg joined Tony Page and Mike Butterworth to take on a tough team from Hornsea in their fourth round match with the advantage of a home draw.

Ian McIlroy headed the field for Wetherby and despite conceding five shots achieved a great 6&4 victory. Second out was Tony Page, who also had to give five shots to his East Coast rival, but fought a close match with considerable determination to seal victory on the 18th. Club Captain Royce Hoodless caddied,  Kathy Page and Ann Hoodless provided the additional support to see Tony and the team through to the fifth round.

Mike Butterworth playing off the ³stick end² managed a half against a dogged opponent and fourth man Ben Ragg took on a 2 handicapper who proved a little too strong and he lost 3&2.

However the loss was academic as Andy Jones had already wrapped up the match with a splendid 6&5 victory out in the country.  The men go through to the 5th round, as do the Ladies team having won their 4th round match the previous week.

The qualifying round for the Rabbits Cup was a net 77 despite being played off the forward markers.  Sixteen competitors will be involved in the knock-out including the Rabbits Captain Ian Nicholls who headed the field with a net 68.

Just making the draw on 77 were previous Rabbits Captain Malcolm Winterburn and Ernest Gilchrist, the winner of the trophy during his year as Club Captain.

Eleven couples in the Ladies Section have qualified to play in the District Finals of the Yorkshire Foursomes to be played at Scarthingwell in June.
Bernadette Clark and Jean Thornton will  be representing the club at Rudding Park at the area finals of the Coronation Foursomes, whilst Susan Lupton and Pat Forster will be going to Worsley Golf Club as Wetherby's representatives in the Australian Spoons Competition.

Club Manager Matthew Streets spent last weekend at Frilford Heath, not playing but 'on the bag' for England's and the World's leading amateur Dan Willett for the match against France.

'Streetsy' as he is known in caddying circles cut his teeth on Jonathan Lomas' bag in the Dubai Desert Classic.  Since then England Captain John Plaxton has been using his brawn and golf knowledge for the amateur International matches first with John Parry and now Dan Willett.

For the record, Dan won his opening 4-somes 4&3, then the afternoon singles easily.  The second  day 4-somes were halved , then in the final singles after being all square at the 11th, Dan shot five consecutive birdies to win 3&2.
